Builder Spotlight #3: PJ O’Leary

May 1, 2025

Delivery service applications today are fragmented and lacking a uniform, consistent reputation solution. Off-chain disputes are not resolved as seamlessly as needed to maintain user trust and consistent ordering. During ETH SF, PJ O’Leary and his brother, Sanchez, set out to solve this issue onchain with BirdFeeder.

BirdFeeder aims to be a sybil-resistant food delivery marketplace, built for ease of use while driving market competition. Prepared during the hackathon, PJ and Sanchez built a custom onchain contract allowing users to authenticate themselves via Self Passport, simply scanning a QR code in the app to verify their unique identity. They also integrated Base’s onchain kit, ensuring wallet log-in is seamless for even Web3 novice users.

Following the hackathon, PJ shared his thoughts on BirdFeeder and building with Self:

What inspired you to develop BirdFeeder?

One of the biggest challenges facing the blockchain industry today is bridging the gap between the potential we, as builders, see in the technology and its tangible application in our physical world. For this reason, real-world assets (RWAs) and methods for reimagining existing applications within a decentralized framework have always been of keen interest to me. BirdFeeder gets to the root of this problem by not only demonstrating a new structure for building decentralized applications that interact with the physical world, but also providing a direct alternative to one of the most extractive business models in existence today.

When did you decide identity verification was a core pillar necessary to solve for?

Identity in decentralized systems has been a key pain point in bridging the RWA gap since day one. Particularly in dealing with cases where reputation is an important factor, providing assurance of sybil resistance alone can tremendously increase the amount of trust you can assign to a user’s profile. Doing so verifiably while preserving the user’s privacy and data sovereignty almost feels like a superpower.

Why did you choose Self for the identity layer?

Self has an incredible amount of flexibility, enabling us to be sure that there is a real, unique person behind any account interacting with the market while maintaining the user’s privacy in all aspects not relevant to the protocol. This factor, alongside Self’s intuitive UX flow, makes it the obvious choice for the job.

What's your vision for the future of BirdFeeder?

With BirdFeeder, we hope to revolutionize the infrastructure and business model of the delivery service industry, providing a framework for constructing other real-world decentralized markets.
